The ancient trees of Whisperwood Forest had seen many things, but never a child quite like Tessa. She arrived on a moonless night, a small figure wrapped in a tattered cloak, her most striking feature two eyes that were pools of absolute black, reflecting no light, betraying no emotion. The Forest children, with their eyes like moss, amber, and sky, had heard whispers of the "Black Eye Children," tales told around crackling fires, stories of fear and mystery.
Elara, the eldest of the Forest children, with hair like spun sunlight and eyes the color of spring leaves, was the first to find Tessa huddled beneath the ancient oak. The other children, usually boisterous and curious, hung back, their laughter hushed, their gazes wary. Tessa didn't speak, didn't cry, just watched them with her fathomless black eyes.
The Forest children lived by simple rules: respect the forest, help each other, and never turn away a creature in need. But Tessa was different. She didn't know the names of the plants, couldn't mimic the bird calls, and seemed to carry a silence that was heavier than the deepest snow. Days turned into weeks. Tessa would sit apart, observing. When the children played hide-and-seek among the roots, she would watch. When they gathered berries, she would follow, her black eyes missing nothing.
